There's a guy in the Grand Rapids Scooter Club here in Michigan that owns two Big Chief scooters. They're not the retro style but modern-looking. He's only done a few modifications to his 50cc, just a new pipe and derestriction, and he can do over 55mph on it. Seriously. I verified it with my GPS. He's never had any problems with it, at all in the 2 years he's had it.
Recently he bought a 150cc that was painted flat black. The guy who owned it couldn't get it to run in 6 months. There was 600 miles on it total. So he put it up for sale for $600. Turns out, there is a cutoff switch in the fuel tank so the fuel pump doesn't burn up. You can look in that tank and see gas, look at the gauge and see it read fuel, but it won't start. He went to the guy's garage, put some more gas in it, and drove the thing home.
Obviously these chinese companies can have a fluke and put together a solid machine once in a while, but I think a lot of the problem people have with Chinese bikes is that they don't maintain and care for them properly. I don't know how it is in NH, but here in West Michigan we have a huge glut of these cheap Chinese bikes and the VAST majority of them are ridden by people who have never ridden or owned a motorized two-wheeled vehicle in their lives. I see it all the time; people complaining how their Chinese scoot breaks down all the time, but then they go off jumping curbs, not changing their oil, not cleaning their carburetors, etc. Don't get me wrong, there are definite QA problems with the Chinese scooter industry in general, but I think a large part of the poor reliability record is that they're chiefly owned by people who don't take care of them.
