Your grasp of scooter history in the US is a bit weak. You wrote:

Perhaps in California, but Vespas were common sights in New York City in the early 50's. And I mean common. Also remember some Cushman scoots in the late 40's. Bought my first Vespa in 1964, but my uncle drove one throughout the 50's.
Sears, Roebuck and Co had their own line of both Cushman and Vespa scoots in the late 50's and 60's.
