I bought an AOER brand electric scooter that was imported from China. It was super cheap; only $600 brand spankin' new, which was the biggest reason that I decided to buy it. I am now trying to sell it to upgrade to a faster gas moped. I think that electric scooters are pretty good for certain uses, and bad for others. You will really not be able to find one that goes in excess of 30mph, which works fine if you just want something to go to your work close by or to run to the store. However, the acceleration is super slow, and cars behind you are likely to be annoyed. Mine was also ridiculously slow going up hills (like 10 mph!), so if you need to go up and down hills on your driving routes, an electric would not be a good idea. You also need to make sure that you live in a place where you have access to an outdoors a/c outlet, which won't work for apartment complexes or dorms. As for the pros, my scooter made zero noise, even at top speed, which made for a really relaxing ride. It is also nice to not have to worry about gas and oil, which is also great if you are an environmentalist.
In summary, if you just want to make short jaunts on 30mph speed limit flat roads, an electric will be perfect and cheap. If you want more than that, spend the extra to get a 50cc engine gas moped.
