My previous post raised the question of how much scootering my wife will have to do for the Yesterday to pay for itself.
Well, I couldn't resist, so I got out my calculator to compute the savings the scooter generates to determine the rate at which it will pay for itself.
Underlying assumptions are:
Yesterday's fuel comsumption: 70 mpg
Wife's Mazda Tribute fuel cons: 25 mpg
Average fuel price $1.85/gal (low estimate)
Maintenance costs: For sake of argument, we'll say it's an even swap, even though I am sure the Yesterday is much less expensive per mile.
First additional expenses to cover are insurance and registration, $250/yr. We are military retirees, and even if we wanted to take advantage of the state's "no insurance for moped " policy, we still must have insurance to drive on our local military base to go to the commissary, Exchange, etc.
THEREFORE, based on the above.
Roughly, the first 3375 miles of scooter replacing Mazda each year will cover the insurance and registration.
Every additional 1000 miles of scooter replacing Mazda saves about $47. This can be applied to recovering the purchase cost of the scooter.
Of course, plain and simple "cruising" to enjoy the wonders of scooting really are just inexpensive extra added benefits.
So, if you will all excuse me, I have to go send the bride to town to do her shopping and other business so that she can start paying off her new Malaguti!
