Aussie's sets new world record for scooter endurance

Julio Languiller of Australia set a new record by riding 809 kms in 24 hours on a 50cc honda scooter.

After braving Melbourne's famous early morning temperatures and contending with frequent stops and starts due to inner city traffic lights, Julio Languiller has achieved his goal of setting a new world record for endurance on a scooter.

The 48 year old, Uruguayan born Australian pulled up yesterday morning to the Dockland meeting point in Melbourne after 24 hours aboard a Honda Today50 scooter with a smile on his face.

"I am a little sore," Julio said. "And the cold was tough particularly between 2 and 4 a.m. but I am very happy."

Julio - a well known member within the local community, is an accomplished artist as well a second world record holder for Hydro Cycling. He was inspired to set this new record in the name of charity when he witnessed first hand the work being done overseas by Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), the world's leading independent medical aid organization.

Honda Australia fully supported Julio with the provision of a scooter and riding gear, as well as technical staff who handled his pit stops throughout the attempt.

"In addition to supporting a very worthy cause, Julio's cause gave Honda the chance to road test their smaller motorcycle in a serious way," said Jason Nicholas, Honda's Brand Manager.

"We were particularly interested in fuel consumption as well as any wear and tear that might occur on such a long ride," he continued.

According to Honda's National Service Manager, Greg Snart who managed the technical support, Julio covered 809 kms over the 24 hour period and had an average fuel consumption of 32.36 km's per litre on the 50cc machine.

"The scooter was very impressive," Snart said. "It used no oil whatsoever and the tyres were fine at the end of the run as well."

Julio and his support crew will now submit the necessary paperwork to the Guiness Book of World Records to be officially recognised for their achievement.

"I had a siesta when I got home", the St Albans resident said. "And I've now got some feeling back in my behind which is good!"

"I am grateful to Honda, my family and friends for their support. I could not have done this without them."
