We all shed a tear over the loss of our State Landmark.

Growing up in New Hampshire I remember being packed in the back of a station wagon when I was young with my two other sisters and riding up to the white mountains a couple times a year. We would sing songs, count out-of-state plates, and read books. We were a regular "That 70's Show".
We would all plaster our faces against the windows as we entered Franconia Notch parkway waiting for the first glimpse of the Old Man. As we passed Echo Lake you would look up and see nothing more than a rock face, But as we would round the bend you would slowly see his face emerge out of the rock face. It was nothing short of spectacular.

Later in life, I worked as a truck driver. As a new driver, I was given the worst route. Northern NH. After a few days of running the route, I couldn't figure out why they thought this route was the "worst" route. Sure, the hours where long, the roads trecherous, and the addresses impossible to find; But that's what made the route so special. As part of my route I passed through Franconia Notch each morning, and then again each night on my return. Having the Old Man greet me each morning always made me feel good. I would always make it a point to try and make it back to the notch in time for sunset and would park my truck at the foot of the Old Man and just relax before my two hour drive back to base.
There was something almost spiritual about the Old Man of the mountains, and for many he will be missed. I shed a tear as I write this and know I am not alone in feeling this loss.
Goodbye Old Man, you will be missed.

I saw the Man in the Mountain story on the news and thought of you. We just went to see it two years ago, and there was a woman selling ice cream there who looked just like our friend Kristie, but older (Kristie's from Cahn-cud) so when we heard about it, Tracie and I looked at each other and said "What's Kristie's mom gonna do now!" Maybe she can sell knockoff Hilfiger T-shirts at Hampton Beach. Soooooo... what the heck are you gonna do for a landmark now? You're back to being the "Gateway to Maine," I guess.
