The Scooter Stereo System: Step-By-Step Guide

Top level Maintenance / Tuning

How to install a great sounding stereo system on your scooter for less than $100.

On my way to work one morning I thought to myself, wouldn't it be great to have a stereo? I missed being able to listen to music while whizzing down the road.

I spent a few nights looking around stores, browsing online and even stopped in to a few hi-fi stereo stores that do custom installations in cars. Besides thinking I was nuts for even thinking about putting a stereo sysem that would be loud enough to hear on a scooter, they basically told me it wasn't possible. That's when I came up with a perfect, low-cost solution. By using a set of Cambridge Soundworks PCWorks speakers and a portable mp3 player, I had my stereo. Since the PCWorks speakers ran off of 12Volts it was just a matter of cutting off the transformer and connecting it directly to the battery on my scooter. Mounting it in a fashion so that it could be easily removed and secured was the tricky part.

The Materials
  • [1] Set of Cambridge Soundworks PCWorks Speakers. [buy online]
  • [4] Wood Screws (3/4" to 1" length)
  • 10 - 15 Zip Ties
  • [1] Fuse holder
  • [1] 3.5 - 4 AMP Slow-Burn Fuse
  • Line noise reduction coil [buy online]
  • wire connectors
  • utility box
  • Any portable stereo with a headphone / line out jack (I use a RIO VOLT mp3/CD player)

Tools needed
  • Screwdriver
  • Power Drill with a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw you are using
  • wire cutters / strippers

Step One - Start by taking the speakers out and finding the power supply cord. You can do one of two things; either cut off the plug end or you can go down to radio shack and find an adapter end that matches the one that comes on your power supply. This way you can save the power supply in case you ever decide to remove the stereo and use it indoors. Attach the terminal ends to the wires from the cord that you just cut by stripping back the wire and then crimping the terminal ends on.
Locate your battery and connect the wire with the white stripe to the (+) side of the battery and the other to the (-) side, then run this wire from your battery compartment to the storage area under your seat. By removing a few body panels you should be able to run the wire so that it's not visible.

Once the wire is run, you will need to cut the wire in order to splice in the noise reduction and fuse. Allow enough wire so that you can move the box that will house the noise reduction and fuse to any area within the under-seat compartment, then make your cut. Strip the ends. Now you should have a piece of wire with the adapter end left over; put it aside for now.

Hi every one,
This is Fancy from BIOS Drive Shenzhen office( Eiasky Technology Electronics Co., Ltd).
I recommend Scooter back-mirror audio ,this back-mirror audio product is suitable for motorcycle, moped, and electric moped. This is a new innovation and patented by China, Japan, and Taiwan and pending by USA. The installation procedures are very easy and consuming the least labor.

The speaker is installed inside the back-mirror body. It has not only the invisible and anti-theft but also water-resistance features.

The 2.1 channel amplifier powered 12V lead-acid battery source and output total 30Watts for R/L channels and one subwoofer. The Titanium diaphragm tweeter is option and removable. It is compatible to standard 3.5mm MP3 plug jack. The thumb switch is water-resistance for all-weather condition.

Visual dazzling needs to strive catching your eyes contact, while audio tenderness and striking penestrate into evevry corner of your soul...

power saving: engine in silence, battery can provide power for the stereo system 8~13 hours depending the batt condition.

water resistence, volume is available when riding speed is up to 80 miles (around 150KM)... with subwoofer enforcing and surrounding devices...../.

hey
i have recently bought a kinroad shmoot xt50q (custom chopper, series 1) and was wondering if i could put a sound system in it, money isnt a problem but there isnt much space in the bike. i have also thought about installing a flame-on-command pipe (new pipe which can make flames shoot out the exhaust when you push a button) for show reasons.

thanks
can you reply to benpsanderson@hotmail.co.uk or on here

Didn't work
Max Traughber 03.02.2006 00:01
I installed it, but with a few differences. My scooter doesn't recharge the battery, and my scooter's battery couldn't handle the sound system within 3 hours. Possibly because I used a power inverter, but even if I didn't, the battery would still die. I'm working out a way to power it through my headlights so dim=music and brights=lights. I'm not too smart about electricity, and I broke my system, so I have to buy a new one. Post a way to power it with the generator instead of the battery.
Scooter Audio System in Malaysia
Green Storm 02.27.2006 03:50

Hi all...I'm from Malaysia and i'm one of the founders of the biggest scooter club in Malaysia, Ghetto Scoot Clan....y'all can check out our cool scooters with fantastic audio system using car's component at our website www.ghettoscoot.cjb.net or our forum at www.uniteforum.cjb.net.........this trend actually faded in 2003 since the goverment banned it but actually there's no written law on it....just a speculation around the country..so right now we are trying to bring back the trend in Malaysia....my scooter was also completed with some extreme audio sysytem...i'm using 2 Mohawk 5" speaker (midrange), 3 Mohawk 6" speaker (midbass), 1 Alfa Linear 10" subwoofer, 4 pieces of 1" tweeter, an Equator pre-amp and a Punch 4 channel amplifier...i'm using a discman to play the song...the sound is boom y'all....but have to get more batteries supply...hehehe.............

> I would go abouts doing it a different way, I would get two small 3 inch speakers, cut two holes in the glove box. and I would resses them in there. so they are flush and not sticking out like that, then I would run the power cable for the speakers under the floor boards up under the seat to the battery. so the wires ar not seen. make sure to also put a small fuse in the line just in case something touches raw metal or shorts out, wont burn up your wires while riding and that would be bad.

Hey, has anyone got any pictures of their scooter all wired up with the sound system.

lloyd
Awesome..
Timothy Eddy 08.09.2005 17:54
Thanks for the idea and the instructions. I followed them to the tee and have a great sound system for the scooter. Just one note.... My speakers didn't have a white stripe on the cord leading to the power supply. Mine had white writing instead, so I treated it as the "white stripe" (positive) wire. Words to the wise... If there is writing on one of the wires and the other is completely black, treat the completely black wire as the "positive" wire, and you'll not have to deal with the extra step I did.... Thanks again for the great idea..

Under $100
Benjamin Betancourt 12.09.2004 20:59

You don't really need to buy a system that is too expensive. You could buy PC speakers with subwoofer about $20. This speakers with a powers source becuase they a small intregraded amplifier in them. Now the speakers without a power source is going to be quiet becuse it have no amplier in it, it's only using the small amp the music, or tape cd is using, which is only a small amount.

My systerm:
-->JCV MP3 CD-Player with shock protection
-->14 watts amplified PC speaker with subwoofer.

Now my problem is that my speakers accept 9 volts DC.
Where do I find a transformer to reduce scooter 12 volts to 9 volts?

Probably I have to build one!
HOW!, HOW HOW HOW HOW HOW!!!!!!!!!!!
bob bob 11.03.2004 07:56

I have a gilera runer 180 and have around 200quid for the stereo im soon fitting, which is:
2 x 10cm speakers
1 x Sony Xplod Headunit...

All i wanna know is how on earth im seing scooters with sub-woofers and hearing that people have, e.g.

2 x 6x9's, a subwoofer and headunit...

WHERE ON EARTH DO YOU PUT IT ALL!?!???? , i have measurd by underseat area and the BIGGEST i could possibly put in there is 2 10cm speakers and a headunit!

Can somebody please explain this to me, or email me on craighutin@aol.com

Thanks

i got a 1984 spree i cutomized it to the max ill get some pics soon but for ur info i got a 400 watt 4 channel amp and 2 4v6 inch midrange and 2 1 inch tweaters and a 6.5 inch tube sub woofer . very confusing to hook up i have 2 10 inch bar green neons and custom paint job very nice. any way hook the amp to the battery and hook the remote wire to the abttery with a switch on it ( to turn the amp on and off) get rf jacks cut them in the center and attach it to headphone wire ( cut the head phone part off the wire and attach that to a cd player ) and mount the speakers to the front faring and the sub the the middle of the faring . Then u got one bad ass blowin ur ears stereo .

p.s. i have 2 battery i switch them evry day and charge one durring the day because thats how much power it draws but its worth it .
