How to De-restrict a Derbi Atlantis or GP1

Top level Maintenance / Tuning

An informative article for you do-it-yourselfers.

Derbi De-restriction
Right out of the box, the Derbi Atlantis and the Derbi GP1 are limited to a max speed of about 28mph.

On the Atlantis, the factory has installed a sleeve in the header of the exhaust pipe - to limit the engine's ability to 'breathe easily'. By drilling out this sleeve, your Atlantis will produce more low-end torque and will increase its top speed to about 40mph.

To begin, remove your exhaust pipe and identify the sleeve. Find (or buy) a drill bit that matches the diameter of the sleeve and drill it out. Feel free to remove the sleeve anyway you can. We've just found that this process works very well.

NOTE: You should be aware that metal shavings will probably drop into the pipe as you drill out the sleeve. Make sure you get all of these out of the pipe before re-installing it.

That's it. Simply re-install the pipe and you've got another 8-10 mph and more torque!

On the GP1, the exhaust system has to be modified and the variator spacer (similar to Kymco re-striction techniques), needs to be removed. To modify the exhaust pipe, you first need to locate a small 'snake like' pipe extension that extends from the header pipe. This extension is 'crimped' at the end and serves to reduce backpressure. To improve performance, you need to remove this 'extension' and then block off the header. (Hacksaw it off and then crimp it an seal it. Better yet, take the pipe off, take it to ye local shop, have the extension cut off and weld the remaining piece closed! - Yet even better - replace the pipe with an aftermarket one!)

Next (or even first - because its a bit simpler) - remove the left side transmission cover and locate the variator. Remove the spacer (see pic below). Re-install and you've added another 7-9mph.

Scooter Buying Tip
Kyle Park 07.27.2008 14:44

Unless you are good mechanic, I would avoid getting any scooters that are not made by major manufacturers. Even though the scooter may look good and have a nice price tag, it will be harder to find parts and mechanics that can work on it. For this reason, it usually much wiser to go with an established brand. It will end up being cheaper in the long run and give you more piece of mind.

Best,

has anyone heard of a Generic Cracker 50 scooter?
its Korean as far as i know and i can't seem to figure out how to derestrict it, i think it may be electronically limited but i'm not sure. the performance is shocking. Accelerating away from a standstill is like watching paint dry. can anyone help me?

Josh Elijah 12.18.2008 13:19
I have the 'Generic XOR competion 50', same make, similar parts just its more power. I was going to get the cracker 50 but it doesn't look as good and has less power.

That I know of, mine is restricted with a washer in a variator and exhaust pipe narrowing. your scooter is likely to be restricted in the same way.

I doubt its restricted electronically becuase it uses a carburettor not a fuel injection system.

matt grasser 08.29.2007 00:26

i took off my exhaust and found that there was no restriction on it but it did have the fork in the pipe and the crimp... so i guess i gotta take care of that.

my main question is if i have to take the ring out of the engine aswell... if anyone can email me some help i'd appreciate it.

2004 Derbi gp1 derestricting
maz pardhan 07.28.2007 18:18
I just bought a 2004 Derbi GP1. It had 5km on it and is new. I looked at the directions for the exhaust modification but the pipe thats mentioned in the article doesn't exist on my bike, hence nothing to cut off and crimp. Is there a slightly different process to deristrict this year? rev /cdi limiter . washer in the exhaust? Im going to have a look at the variator tomorrow to see if teh spacer exists as well. Any help or instructions would be appreciated.
thx

Honda SGX 50(SKY)
Some Guy 06.12.2006 16:47
This is to anyone who is intrested in inproving the speed of a honda sky.

i have found that the front pullies from a Yamaha Areox fit on the honda also with a bit of welding involved, it will inprove the top speed of the scooter to 50mph but the pick up will not be as good but it is worth it. Also the cluch spring in them as standard is too stiff, i would suggest to put a softer cluch spring in to also inprove the top speed.

No you wont need a new clutch rollers. any race pipe for the AY 50 should make quite a big difference. A cheaper way to do it is to cut the baffers out of it.
